WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump has spent 20 months promising an economic boom, but a surprisingly positive jobs report in August instead provoked frustration. Trump blamed inflation, interest rates, and financial markets, declaring that success does not cause inflation but stupidity does. He criticized the stock market’s drop on inflation concerns and questioned the Fed’s monetary policy.
Despite a 2% annual economic growth rate, slower than during the Biden administration, Trump blamed higher interest rates on U.S. debt and tariffs, which fueled inflation. The national debt has reached $40 trillion, and 10-year Treasury rates rose to 4.79%. His approval rating on the economy dropped to 32%, down from 50% in 2018.
Trump’s policies, including tariffs and tax cuts, have contributed to inflation and high rates, undermining his credibility. He dismissed concerns about inflation risks, predicting GDP growth of 12–15% if rates were lower. Economists like Joe Brusuelas and Ernie Tedeschi warn that growth alone may not solve budget deficits, which are projected to exceed $3 trillion in a decade.
Trump’s threat to cut trade with foreign countries risks further economic damage. While AI and productivity gains are touted as growth drivers, experts caution against overly optimistic projections. The administration’s efforts to reduce debt and deficits face political challenges, requiring spending cuts or tax hikes to stabilize markets and improve economic conditions.
